Severely degraded air quality in a smoke control area
I live in a terraced house in a smoke controlled area in Greater London. My neighbour uses a wood stove as their primary source of heating. The stove is used multiple times a day, emitting smoke from the chimney.
The air quality in and around my home is severely degraded. The smoke comes into my house even with the windows and doors closed. We often have to enter and exit our house through a cloud of smoke, and when we do our home is flooded with the pollution as we open the door.
Persistent complaints to the environmental protection team at the local council has lead to an investigation, of which the results are pending. Unfortunately the only real outcome is they will incur a fine.
What we need is behaviour change. It is unreasonable in 2025 that neighbours in this position are so powerless to stop pollution directly attributable to domestic combustion.
There is sufficient evidence that pollution caused by domestic combustion is harmful to health. There is sufficient evidence that domestic combustion is not environmentally friendly or economical.
Allowing the emission of smoke from chimneys in smoke controlled areas makes a farce of the clean air act. Policy makers need to be bold and ban domestic combustion.
