Unnecessary pollution in Devon

I live in a village in rural Devon, UK. During the spring and summer, air quality is very good in locations away from road traffic. Autumn and winter mean lots of woodsmoke (also other types), from modern housing as well as older properties. This gets into my apartment, despite double glazing. I have bought an air purifier, which helps.

After going out two days ago, I have been expelling foul tasting muck which came from people's chimneys. This situation is not ideal; nor is it necessary. Home owners with central heating, double glazing and modern properties, which comprise the majority, do not need to be causing this pollution.
